Deadbolt Installation Options: From Basic Upgrades to Mortise Lock Systems
When most people picture a deadbolt, they think of a standard single-cylinder unit fitted into a cylindrical bore — but that's just the starting point. For exterior residential doors, we frequently install Grade 1 deadbolts from brands like Schlage and Kwikset, which offer significantly more resistance to kick-in and picking than a standard door knob lock. For properties where the door frame itself is a weak point — common in older craftsman homes in Sylvan Park or Germantown — we reinforce the strike plate with 3-inch screws that reach the stud behind the frame, a step most DIY installations skip entirely.
For higher-security applications, we also install jimmy proof deadbolts, which mount vertically on the inside of the door surface rather than boring through it. This design interlocks with a rim strike and is exceptionally resistant to prying. On commercial properties, the mortise lock is often the right answer: a self-contained unit recessed into a pocket cut into the door edge, combining a latch, deadbolt, and sometimes a cylinder in a single robust assembly. Our commercial locksmith team handles mortise lock installation and replacement on everything from retail storefronts on Broadway to office buildings in the SoBro district.
